Human Soft Tissue Sarcoma Study Initiated

Atrium Health

Knowledge gained from this critical work on aggressive soft tissue tumors in Bernese Mountain Dogs is being directly translated into similar efforts to improve outcomes of these devastating tumors in people.  Working in concert with physicians, scientists, and healthcare teams at Atrium Health/Levine Cancer Center and Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Comprehensive Cancer Center, and with sponsorship of the Paula Takacs Foundation for Sarcoma Research RTI will support a two-year study applying Urine Molecular Fingerprinting on over 1000 urine samples from patients undergoing treatment for aggressive soft tissue tumors.  The goal of this work will be to develop “cancer-type specific fingerprints” of tumors as an aid to detection, diagnosis and to monitor effects of treatments.  The ideal (and hoped for) outcome of this work will be making significant improvements in the management of aggressive soft tissue tumors, where, unfortunately, progress has been slow in coming.
